Surgical Treatment of Congenital Heart Surgery
In 2018, Dr. Husain joined our program as a Professor in the Departments of Surgery and Pediatrics as well as Section Chief of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He is also the Co-Director for the Heart Center at Primary Children's Hospital. He completed his pediatric cardiothoracic surgical training in 2007 and was on the faculty at the University of Texas San Antonio prior to his arrival in Utah. He has undergone formal leadership training at both The Wharton School of Business as well as with the Intermountain Healthcare Leadership Institute. As a result, his leadership continues in our long tradition as a Heart Center at Primary Children's towards a healthy multidisciplinary culture which focuses upon outstanding outcomes and patient experience. His current research interests are in the areas of single ventricle physiology, surgical technical training as well as multi-institutional initiatives to drive consensus approaches towards the care of congenital heart disease. His primary clinical focus is with neonatal cardiac surgery and the patient and family experience within the in-patient setting. He also has a strong interest and degree of experience with international humanitarian surgical mission work and takes a team overseas on a yearly basis to provide congenital heart surgical care to underserved populations. Dr. Husain serves his subspecialty on many national fronts holding leadership positions within the Congenital Heart Surgeons Society, Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons. He also currently serves as a Director for the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. The surgical team within the Heart Center at Primary Children's consists of 4 board certified surgeons who work together as a team to care for patients with complex congenital heart disease. Dr. Husain's main focus is to ensure this group is aligned and focused in a unified manner towards this challenging and critical professional responsibility.
